Claim spouse relief for Working Women

05:55 AM Mar 02, 2010SINGAPORE - It is the tax filing season again, and the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (Iras) would like to remind all taxpayers to e-File their tax returns by April 18, or send in their paper returns by April 15.

About 1.57 million taxpayers are required to file their returns for the Year of Assessment 2010.

Among them, 1.12 million need not provide their employment income information, as their employers will do so directly to Iras.

About 653,000 taxpayers do not have to file the tax return at all, unless they have other income - such as from rental - not auto-included, or have changes to make to their tax relief claims.

As announced in the Budget Speech 2010, there are significant changes to the income tax reliefs this year. Female taxpayers can now claim spouse relief - and they can do so by sending an email to spouserelief@iras.gov.sg, giving their name, their husband's name, and both their NRIC or tax reference numbers.

Or, they may provide Iras with the details via a helpline (1800 356 8300), fax (6351 3636) or post (The Comptroller of Income Tax, Iras, 55 Newton Road, Revenue House, Singapore 307987).

Taxpayers eligible to claim other dependant and handicapped dependant reliefs may do so when filing their returns.

In order for a taxpayer to claim spouse, qualifying child, working mother's child or parent relief, the dependant must not have been earning more than $4,000 in 2009.

This ceiling is up from $2,000 previously. There is also no more income threshold for handicapped dependant relief.

For e-Filing assistance, go to any e-Filing Service Centres including all CPF Service Centres, from March 15 to April 17. For e-Filing queries: Call 1800-252-5011 during operating hours. For general enquiries: Call 1800-356-8300 or email taxqueries@iras.gov.sg.
